Tips for hiring staff for your small business

Any hiring decisions that you make for your business are crucial. Hiring good staff can positively impact your bottom line and make your life easier as a business owner.
On the flip side, bad hiring decisions can be a nightmare. Here’s our top tips to help you with your hiring decisions.

Tip 1 Identify the skills your business needs
This includes both your current needs as well as any future ones to help your business to grow. Identify the key skills, qualifications and experience you need a potential staff member to have to be an asset to your business. Then include that information in your job ad so you minimise the number of unsuitable applicants that you get.

Tip 2 Interview thoroughly
Don’t just believe everything someone has on their resume. Interview them and ask them questions to demonstrate they have the ability to help your business.

Tip 3 Do a background check
Make sure you check the referees of any person before you hire them.

Tip 4 Understand your legal obligations
Employees have legal rights and it’s important that you comply with all your legal obligations as an employer. Employee rights vary depending on factors such as:
· the type of work your staff will be doing, and
· whether they will be full-time, part-time or casual staff.
The Fair Work Commission is responsible for ensuring that employers meet their obligations to employees and they can provide all the relevant information you need to know, including award pay rates.
